The Alief ISD Special Olympics program, proudly known as the Alief Superstars, is more than an athletic programβ€”it is a family. According to Tracy Bonay, Adaptive Physical Education teacher, Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) Head of Delegation for Region 4, and a dedicated leader within Alief ISD, the program’s uniqueness begins with the fact that it is district-sponsored. This structure enables consistent support while fostering a close-knit environment where athletes and their families feel connected, supported, and valued.

Throughout the year, Alief Superstars athletes compete in six different sports, offering opportunities for growth, confidence, and skill development. The season begins in August with swimming, followed by bocce. Volleyball starts in September, and the fall concludes with bowling. After the Christmas break, athletes return to competition with basketball and finish the year strong with track and field in the spring. This year-round schedule keeps athletes active, motivated, and engaged.

Supporting athletes with diverse abilities is a cornerstone of the program. Bonay emphasizes that during practices, competitions, and district-sponsored activities, every athlete’s abilities and skills are encouraged and praised. Coaches, volunteers, parents, and fellow athletes collaborate to create an inclusive, adaptive, and positive environment, enabling each athlete to progress at their own pace while feeling empowered and celebrated.

For Bonay, some of the most meaningful moments in her four years of coaching the Alief Superstars come from celebrating athlete achievements. Whether it’s mastering a new skill, receiving a medal, or crossing the finish line of a race, those shared celebrations are unforgettable. β€œThe smile on their face when they see how proud I am of them fills my heart,” she sharesβ€”moments that define the true purpose of Special Olympics.

The program’s impact reaches far beyond athletics, touching families and strengthening the community. Bonay shared a message from an Alief Superstars parent that captures this impact perfectly. The parent described how the Special Olympics has positively transformed not only their child, but their entire family. Through participation, their child has grown socially, academically, and emotionally, feeling empowered and supported by what the parent lovingly called the β€œbeautiful family” of Special Olympics.

Looking ahead, Bonay’s goals for the team focus on building self-confidence, enhancing athletic skills, and fostering lifelong friendships among athletes and families. She values how athletes develop leadership skills and carry those lessons into future stages of life. With year-round training and competition, the program continues to promote athlete well-being, unity, community engagement, and acceptance for everyone.

Community involvement remains vital to the success of the Alief Superstars. Bonay encourages community members to support the program by becoming volunteers through Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) and by signing up to help at practices and events. With continued support, the Alief Superstars will continue to thriveβ€”showcasing that success is not only measured in medals, but in confidence, connection, and heart.
